# Notes from Peer Review Session ## Proposal 1 Sina was the scribe. Rhett, Desiree, and myself were the reviewers. ## Proposal 2 Dana is the leader 1. Goal is to understand alloy structure of thermally grown oxide (TGO) for Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBC) work 2. Optimize platininum modified aluminum coatings. 3. Measure mechanical properties of TGO Covers intellectual merit well. They are very clear about how they're going to get there, why they'll be successful. Broader impacts okay. Doesn't really get specific other than new engines can use them. Desiree was reviewer 1. Gives 4. Very detailed proposal. Objectives were very good intellectual merit: they had teamed up with legit people. ORNL, NASA, Rolls Royce Clear what they wanted to do with the gas turbine performance. They didn't really expand on how that's actually going to go. Weaknesses for intellectual merit. Why do we care? What's the point? Broader impact. Not a lot of meat there. Would train 9 PhDs. Huge project. Melle is reviewer 2. Durability and something of thermal barrier coatings Well supported by people from NASA and rolls royce. Intellectual merit is strong PI team has extensive experience with this stuff Scope might be broad. Could be more defined Huge project. 9 students. Rhett is reviewer 3. No mechanisms for success they seem to know what they're talking about set aside money for publications... but no real explanation Imapct: *take a second to respond*. Shared impact of lifetime of turbines. That's basically the impact of any turbine lifecycle. No real impact. Scope is huge. 5 year project and seems like a lot. They're doing a lot of work (27 alloys??) Concerns about getting it all done. Gives it a 4. Likes oxidation.
